Day 359: Loaded Pack

My pack is loaded and I’m ready to fly. A few minor adjustments and I’ll be off in a plane!

I’m writing this blog the day before (of course). I will likely be too panicky the day of the flight.
Even tho I have nothing to worry about the security part of getting into an airport makes me nervous. I guess I have fears that for some reason out of my control they will detain me.

Prepackaged granola and an empty water bottle will be the most scandalous things I plan on having in my carry on bag.

Day 358: Lilacs

The lilac bush at my house have full green leaves out, but no blooms on them yet. My mother’s lilac bush is amazing and fragrant.

I love the smell of lilac! I really hope to find a perfume or body spray with this smell. Or perhaps I can make a dried potpourri sachet sometime.
If I ever learn how to make an essential oil from flowers, I will do it. Someday, someday.

I’m worried I will miss my lilac bush blooming. I leave tomorrow for my flight abroad.

Day 357: Shellac Update

Okay, I know feet are weird shaped, but I promised to keep you up to date on my shallac toe nail polish.

One of my toenails lost the paint. Oddly enough it was all in one piece. My girl friend said that sometimes if the color was painted to the cuticle it can come off more easily as the toe nails grow.

I have some purple nail polish that I will paint on my nails as they peel off. I think this will make some cute toes with different shades of purple.

Day 357: New Reads

Started reading a new book and yes, I know that is very silly considering I’m leaving soon. I wanted to give it a taste before I left for Spain.

I’m only a couple of chapters in and each chapter is from a different characters’ point of view. So it is kinda like I’ve read the first week of this family’s adventures in the Congo from four different perspectives.

The trouble with each chapter having a different perspective is that they think and will use language differently.
I’ve read other books that use this style successfully. So far, the characters are quite similar and shallow.

There is a big difference in vocabulary between the five year old and the rest of the family. Even so, the five year old talks more like L’Engle’s Charles Wallace than any real child.

Currently, I’m on the hunt for a skinny paperback for the plane ride to Spain. I think I need to take a dive at the used bookstore nearby.

Day 356: Animal Pileup

They show their love for each other in weird, weird ways. At the end of a day where dogwood winter has set in the animals want to pile up like puppies.

Not only is Isabella hugging her brother’s butt, she is getting squashed by my legs wrapped up in blankets. She stayed like this for over 30 minutes. That is a fairly long time for our spazz of a cat.

Day 355: Add-In Muffins

I have been enjoying having Amish friendship bbread starter in the house. The only downside is that I don’t have enough friends that want to deal with the starter.

The fun part about this basic recipe is that it just tastes like sweet bread until you add more flavors. I admit that I had to look up some ideas as to what I could add and get some sort of idea about quantity. Here is the useful link I found. Thank you, Armchair World for blogging and sharing!

To this batch I added the basics, plus 3 mashed bananas, applesauce instead of oil, and milk chocolate chips. I usually use semi-sweet chocolate chips, but I found the milk chocolate were on sale.

Even though I added sugar to the mix, I don’t add pudding mix (substitute 1 cup flour) so it stayed semi-sweet with bombs of chocolate sugary goodness. Honestly, I think 3/4 cup flour substitute would be a wiser choice. My batter ends up a little thicker than it probably should be.

I grabbed a bunch of hot muffins and gave them to my Spain-girlfriend. She came over and we had a gear spray down for bugs and water proofing. Jess snarffed a muffin before she left. Kit and I aren’t sure if any made it home to share with her folks :-) The best compliment is nothing leftover!

Day 354: Pot O’ Glumpki

I know I keep posting about glumpki, but I promise this is my last one. The process if very fastinating to me. I haven’t cooked anything similar to this before.

After mixing the meat and rice, blanching the cabbage and rolling the glumpki it is packed into a heavy bottomed pot that is lined with cabbage leaves.

After cleaning the pot I found out why we line it with extra leaves. There were two to four leaves that burned a bit, but all the glumpki were perfectly cooked.

We added four cans of diced tomatoes (I think) and a couple mini cans of tomatoe juice. We used plain diced tomatoes, but I wonder, for next time, how a garlic and herb spiced would taste.
